Security Situation

The security situation in Ghana is unproblematic; the country is a pleasant and safe travel destination. Locals still largely view foreigners as guests (and not as tourists to be exploited). There is also no terrorist activity in the country.

Specifically for northern Ghana, travel information from the Federal Foreign Office points  to “occasional conflicts between local population groups,” which can even lead to nighttime curfews. It is true that in recent years, violent clashes between rival factions have occurred in certain places, mostly in connection with election campaigns.

Such situations would only be dangerous for tourists if they were to stumble into them unaware. However, we are very familiar with the local situation and, of course, we inform ourselves in advance and in detail about potential hotspots of unrest – which we could then avoid, since they are limited to specific areas anyway. As local tour guides, we can, of course, assess potential risks much better than individual foreign travelers.

The same applies to crime in the big cities , which is also addressed in some travel information. If you have a reliable local companion or follow a few expert behavioral tips, you can easily “venture” into the bustling urban life – and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how friendly and helpful most Ghanaians are towards foreign guests.
