Integrated Tourism in Ghana Women's trip “Ghana's strong women” – the program:

After your arrival on Saturday, you will spend two acclimatization days at the KASAPA Centre: an afternoon of swimming, getting to know our local community, and initial contact with Ghanaian women from different walks of life (see table for details).

Then we set off for Kumasi and the surrounding area (days 4-7): First, to the large, wonderfully tranquil Lake Bosumtwi, where we spend four nights in a hotel right on the lakeshore. We’ll visit historical relics of the Ashanti kingdom and its traditional religion, including a visit to an  old Ashanti fetish shrine (a UNESCO World Heritage Site); an extensive tour of Kumasi’s huge, colorful, and bustling central market, and meet with representatives of a traditional market women’s cooperative. If possible, we’ll be welcomed by an Ashanti “queen mother” and visit the weaving villages of Adanwomase and Bonwire, where the famous Kente cloth is produced. Traditionally, this is only permitted for men; however, we’ll also meet a few women who have carved out a place for themselves in the highly respected weaving guild.

Our journey then continues to the cocoa farming village of Mesomagor, about 1.5 hours north of Cape Coast (days 8-10). Here, you’ll learn about rural production methods: You’ll learn how oil palm fruits, cassava roots, and cocoa beans are processed, taste freshly tapped palm wine, and meet representatives of the local women’s association. Mesomagor also boasts a fantastic dance group, a bamboo orchestra, and a captivating storytelling evening full of traditional stories – pure village life!

We then travel along Ghana’s west coast (days 11-13), first to an idyllic beach resort on Ampenyi Beach . After our first overnight stay there, we visit the “Global Mamas” in Cape Coast , a self-help organization of around 600 women who market their traditionally made handicrafts internationally. The next day we head from Ampenyi Beach to the fishing town of Elmina with its old Portuguese trading and slave fortress, and then on to Kakum National Park . Usually we spend the night in the jungle in a well-secured treehouse (otherwise in a nearby hotel). Early in the morning we walk along the famous hanging bridge trail through the jungle canopy and explore the forest nature trail; visit to the museum at Cape Coast Castle; and return to the KASAPA Center in the afternoon.

On day 14, we travel to Accra (including a visit to the large “Global Mamas” store). After a final overnight stay at the KASAPA Centre on day 15, we transfer to Accra Airport for your return flight.
