In the morning, we’ll head to West Accra (14 km) to visit a (private) elementary/junior high school, meet with the principal/owner, and learn more about the job prospects and careers of well-educated Ghanaian women. In the afternoon, we’ll head to Cape Coast (approx. 116 km).

Tuesday
Kakum Treehouse or possibly a hotel nearby
Half board
After Elmina (14 km): Slave trading castle, picturesque fishing town. Return to Cape Coast for dinner, then continue to Kakum National Park (total approx. 47 km).

Wednesday
Beach hotel in/or near Axim
Half board
Early morning: Treetop walk over suspension bridges, high among the tall rainforest trees of Kakum National Park, followed by an approximately one-hour nature trail with an expert guide. Then to Cape Coast (33 km) for breakfast and on to Axim (approx. 140 km).

Day trip to the stilt village of Nzulezo (drive approx. 54 km, then cruise approx. 2 km), afternoon to a beach accommodation near Cape Coast (approx. 183 km)

Trip to Cape Coast, visit to the handicraft project “Global Mamas”; 3-4 hour batik workshop with one of the Mamas

Full board
Drive north to the cocoa-farming village of Mesomagor (approx. 55 km). Hike through the village, and enjoy an evening of traditional storytelling.

Hike across farmland, tasting of fresh palm wine in the bush; meeting with representatives of the Mesomagor Women’s Association; performance by the traditional bamboo orchestra and the village dance group

Visit to small rural businesses in the neighboring village, lunch in Mesomagor on request, then to Lake Busumtwi near Kumasi (approx. 200 km)

Day trip to Kumasi: a leisurely stroll through the Central Market, meeting with representatives of the Association of Traditional Market Women, visit to the Cultural Center, and return to Lake Busumtwi (approx. 53 km each way)

Day trip to the traditional weaving villages of Adawonmase and Bonwire; on the way back, visit the fetish shrine in Ejisu-Besease. Return to the lake (approximately 40 km each way).

Day trip to Kumasi: Museum in the old palace of the Ashanti king; possibly an audience with the traditional dignitary, the Queen Mother. Return to the lake (approx. 40 km each way).

to Accra (235 km): Sightseeing, visit to the large “Global Mamas” retail store. (The program for this day could possibly be swapped with that of Day 3.)
