Depending on your arrival date, you will first spend (at least) two days acclimatizing at the KASAPA Centre. Then the
Travel north via Bobiri Forest Reserve (an overnight stay there) and an ancient fetish shrine in Ejisu-Besease . Then to Lake Bosumtwi , a magical, large crater lake surrounded by high mountains, which still holds special religious significance for the Ashanti people today (an overnight stay at the Lake Point Guest House right on the lake), and to Kumasi . There, visit the huge, colorful and lively Kumasi Central Market and the Cultural Centre with its handicraft stalls and a small, very informative museum on the history of the Ashanti kingdom. Overnight stay in Kumasi. The next morning, depart for a seven-hour drive north.
to Mole National Park . It is home to herds of buffalo and antelope, cohorts of monkeys, bush pigs, individual lion families, and groups of elephants. To allow enough time for guided tours through the vast savannah, we spend two nights at the park’s hotel.
Not far from Mole National Park, we then visit the famous old mud mosque in Larabanga ; then we are welcomed by the community tourism project of the nearby village of Mognori (one overnight stay). Afterwards, we continue north via Tamale (one overnight stay) to
Sirigu . This sprawling farming village west of Bolgatanga is home to a remarkable self-help project run by a women’s group to preserve ancient craft traditions, especially the artistic geometric wall paintings in the farmsteads. Three nights in the project’s comfortable tourism center, participation in a short workshop on ancient weaving and painting techniques, a day trip to the old Pikworo slave market near Paga and the famous mud-brick church in Navrongo with its traditional wall paintings, and a hotel overnight stay and market visit to Bolgatanga or directly to
Tongo , two to three nights in the guesthouses of our former tour guide, Prince Abdallah. His late father was a highly respected prince here for decades. Short excursions into the surrounding area with its bizarre rock formations and a day trip to the idyllic mountain village of Tengzug , famous for its ancient fetish sanctuary hidden in a high cave, which is also open to foreign guests. With a bit of luck (and perhaps minor adjustments to the itinerary), in October we can also experience the powerful dances with which the locals celebrate their traditional New Year’s Eve in Tongo.
